How to Download Your Shutterstock Licence Proof (Complete Guide)
Shutterstock is one of the largest stock media platforms in the world, with over 400 million images, videos, and music tracks. If you've been licensing content from Shutterstock — whether through a subscription plan, on-demand packs, or an enterprise agreement — you've built up a library of licensed assets. Each one came with a licence, and each licence needs proof.
Unlike some platforms that generate a standalone PDF per download, Shutterstock handles licence documentation through its "Proof of License" system. Getting that proof for each asset is possible, but it requires individual effort for every single item. Here's how to do it — and what to watch out for.
What Is a Shutterstock "Proof of License"?
When you download an image, vector, or video from Shutterstock, the platform records the transaction in your account. The Proof of License is a document that confirms:
- The asset ID and preview thumbnail
- The licence type (Standard or Enhanced)
- The date the licence was granted
- The account holder and subscription plan at the time of download
This document is your legal receipt. It's what you'd show in response to a copyright inquiry, an internal audit, or a client request for documentation. Shutterstock licences are perpetual — once you've licensed an asset, you can use it forever under the terms of that licence, even after your subscription ends. But "forever" means nothing without proof.
How to Download Shutterstock Licence Proof Manually
Step 1: Sign in to your Shutterstock account
Go to shutterstock.com and log in. If your organization uses a team account, make sure you're signed in under the correct seat — each team member has their own download history, and licences are tied to the individual user who performed the download.
Step 2: Open your Download History
Navigate to your account dashboard, then click "Download History". This page shows a chronological list of every asset you've downloaded. You can filter by date range, content type (images, videos, music), and licence type. The history goes back to the beginning of your account — Shutterstock doesn't delete old records.
Step 3: Access the Proof of License for an asset
For each asset in your download history, look for the licence information link or the "i" icon next to the download entry. Clicking this opens a detail view or generates a Proof of License document for that specific asset. Some account types may also show a direct "Download licence" or "View licence" button. The document typically opens as a new page or downloadable PDF.
Step 4: Save the document
Save the Proof of License to your local machine or cloud storage. If the licence opens as a web page rather than a PDF, use your browser's "Print to PDF" function (Ctrl+P → Save as PDF) to create a permanent record. Name the file with the Shutterstock asset ID for easy cross-referencing later.
Step 5: Repeat for every asset in your library
Page through your entire download history and repeat the process. Shutterstock typically displays 20–50 items per page. If you have thousands of downloads, expect to navigate through dozens or hundreds of pages.
What About the Shutterstock API?
Technically, Shutterstock offers an API that allows programmatic access to your licence history. The /v2/images/licenses endpoint can return licence data in JSON format, and you could build a script to iterate through your entire history.
In practice, this is useful only if you're a developer or have one on staff. You'll need to:
- Register for API access and obtain OAuth credentials
- Handle pagination (the API returns results in pages of 20–100)
- Parse the JSON response and convert it into a usable format (PDF, CSV, etc.)
- Deal with rate limits — Shutterstock throttles API calls, so bulk retrieval takes time
- Maintain the script as Shutterstock updates their API
For most users, the API route is more trouble than it's worth. It trades hours of clicking for hours of coding and debugging — and you still need to maintain it going forward.
How Long Does Manual Download Take?
Shutterstock's interface is clean, but licence retrieval isn't optimized for bulk operations. Realistically, each Proof of License takes about 15–20 seconds when you factor in loading, clicking, saving, and naming the file.
- 100 assets: ~25–35 minutes
- 500 assets: ~2–3 hours
- 2,000 assets: ~8–11 hours (a full workday or more)
- 10,000 assets: ~40–55 hours. That's an entire work week spent clicking.
For agencies and enterprise teams that have licensed tens of thousands of assets over the years, manual retrieval simply isn't viable. It's not a matter of patience — it's a question of whether you can justify billing that time or losing that productivity.
⚠️ Warning: Don't assume Shutterstock will always provide your licence history. While Shutterstock's licences are perpetual, access to the platform's tools and records depends on having an active account in good standing. Account closures, corporate restructuring, or platform changes could limit your ability to retrieve documentation in the future. The only truly safe backup is one you control — a local or cloud copy of every Proof of License document.
Standard vs. Enhanced Licences
When reviewing your Shutterstock licence proofs, pay attention to the licence type:
- Standard Licence: Covers most common use cases — websites, social media, presentations, editorial content. Limited to 500,000 copies for print use. No use on merchandise or products for resale.
- Enhanced Licence: Extends usage to merchandise, products for resale, templates, and unlimited print runs. Significantly more expensive per asset, but necessary for commercial products.
Your Proof of License will clearly state which licence type was granted. If a client needs to sell products featuring a Shutterstock image, you'll need to verify that the Enhanced licence was purchased — and the proof document is the only way to confirm that after the fact.
